Hora Calculator

A horā is a planetary hour. The day is divided into 24 horās, each ruled by one of the seven traditional planets in classical Chaldean order. Timing a specific activity to the planet that rules its concerns (Jupiter for teaching, Venus for art, Mercury for trade) is a classical Indian timing practice.

Classical Tradition

The horā tradition is documented in the Bṛhat Hora Sara (the very text whose name carries hora) and in muhūrta classics. The Chaldean order of planetary hours is shared across Indian, Greco-Roman, and medieval Western astrology — one of the deepest cross-tradition continuities in the history of astrology.

How We Compute It

We compute local sunrise and the weekday lord for your date, then assign each of the 24 hours from sunrise to the next sunrise to a planetary ruler in Chaldean order (Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon → Saturn → Jupiter → Mars, then repeating).
