Classical Tradition
Vimśottarī daśā is the dominant timing system in Vedic astrology, treated in BPHS Ch.46–58 and across the modern English systematizations. The 120-year cycle is divided so that each planet rules for a specific number of years — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rāhu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17.

The starting daśā is determined by the Moon’s nakṣatra at your birth: each of the 27 nakṣatras is assigned a ruling planet, and the daśā runs in classical order from there. Read the mahā-daśā as the dominant life-theme — what kind of growth or pressure is in play across these years. The antar-daśā (sub-period) shows the specific texture inside that theme. Predictions get sharper when daśā, transit, and natal yoga all point in the same direction.
